What happened to the aspirations you had as a child?

Leanne-aspirationsEveryone has something they aspire to be, do or have, which is often felt as a deep yearning, that we sometimes cannot articulate or even understand.

Most of us had big dreams as children, but as we get older, they become distant memories and we get on with life in the “real world”. Some of us fight hard to hang onto those dreams for as long as possible, but it is easy to become jaded from the opinions, views and expectations of friends, family and society.

Despite all of this, there is still a little voice or feeling reminding you every so often of the aspirations you had when you were younger. No matter how much you try, your aspirations stay alive within you. All that changes is your motivation and courage to pursue them.

In the end, most of us accept our reality, give up on our dreams and become just another “rat” in the race. We become fearful of getting things wrong and going against the crowd, so instead we do everything we can to fit in and achieve “success”.

As the realisation that our aspirations will not actualise, it can be easy to lose hope that life can be any different, along with the desire to do or become anything significant.

Despite all of this, there is still a little voice or feeling reminding you every so often of the aspirations you had when you were younger. No matter how much you try, your aspirations stay alive within you. All that changes is your motivation and courage to pursue them.

I strongly believe that it’s never too late to take action and realise your aspirations. That said, depending on how long you’ve waited to revisit your aspirations, some can become outdated and some change completely.

Maybe you had slightly more daring aspirations as a child, which means you may need to tweak or adjust them. So rather than becoming an Olympic gymnast, your aspiration may now be to run a Pilates or Yoga practice, or maybe even to just take up one of the exercises and become as flexible as you were in your teens.

The fact is that at any time in your life you can take action and put in place a powerful plan to turn your aspirations into reality.

Today, start to reconnect with your aspirations by answering the following four questions:

  • What aspirations do you have?
  • What are you yearning to do, see or be?
  • If you could achieve or accomplish anything in your life, what would it be?
  • What interests did you have years ago that you could and would like to revive today?

Once you have a list, choose the one thing that you desire the most and consider the steps you can take to make that aspiration a reality.

“To desire is to obtain; to aspire is to achieve. ~ James Allen
