Discover 5 things to help you stay motivated

When you are unhappy in your job or career, it can be a challenge to stay motivated. Here are five things that can help you to maintain your motivation:

1. A clear vision and goal

What are you working towards? If you are unhappy where you are, why are you still there? Do you have a bigger plan or goal?

It is difficult to move forward when you don’t actually know where you want to get to. Yes, you can move into another job or career but if you do not have a clear vision for your career and life, you risk ending up in the exact same situation you left, just in a different job or career.

Clarify the vision for your life and career and work out exactly what you are working towards. Having a vision will keep you motivated on those days when you ask yourself “What’s the point?”

2. A plan

Once you know where you want to get to, you need to work out how you will get there. What do you need to do? Who do you need support from? What resources will you need?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you will find it challenging to stay motivated. A plan gives you clarity and without clarity, it is easy to become overwhelmed and stay stuck.

Spend time working out what you need to do and have in order to create the vision you have for your career and life.

3. A coach

Working with a coach can help you to stay on track with your plan and hold you accountable to the goals you have set for your career and life. A coach can give you feedback on your progress and remind you of what you are working towards in times of doubt or uncertainty. A coach can also offer encouragement and support when you are not feeling at your best.

Consider if working with a coach could help you to create and follow a plan that will move you closer to having a career and life you love.

4. A supportive team

In an ideal world, the people you love, support and believe in you, no matter what you decide to do with your life. They will encourage you and lift you up when you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused.

Unfortunately that is not always the case. It is essential you surround yourself not only with people who support and believe in you, but also with people who have an optimistic and positive outlook on life.

Take a look at the people you spend most of your time with. If they don’t make you feel good about yourself and they discourage you from pursuing the vision you have for your life, think about how you can start to network with people who will encourage you to stick to your plan and keep moving forward through obstacles and challenges.

5. A strong mental and physical state

This could possibly be the most important of the 5 things. Your physical and mental wellbeing are paramount. If you are feeling less than your best, it’s inevitable that your motivation will be low.

You know the drill – eat well, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Maintaining your mental wellbeing can be a little trickier. Monitor your thoughts and self-talk. How is your self-confidence and self-esteem? It is vital to work on maintaining a positive mind-set.

Despite being most important, our mental and physical wellbeing are often the easiest to neglect. Put regular practices in place for sustaining a strong and healthy mental and physical state.

“People who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity, no matter how impressive their other talents.” ~ Andrew Carnegie
