As humans we believe what we see, we make subconscious decisions and judgements about people in just a few seconds – especially in an interview situation so what you wear is vital to how the interviewer sees you.
What to do
- Research the company’s dress code – match their style of dress but even if it’s very casual aim to include some form of tailoring – smart trousers/skirt/shift dress or jacket.
- A jacket will always look smart but if you feel overdressed you can remove it (so long as you are wearing a long sleeved top/shirt underneath)
- Wear something that you feel comfortable in – this is not the occasion for something brand new! If you can wear them, heels will always make you stand better so long as they’re not too high!
- Ensure your grooming is impeccable – clean clothes, shoes, hair, nails, body and wear some make-up – it’s been found that women who wear make-up can earn over 20% more than those that don’t!
- Wear simple understated accessories that look amazing but don’t jangle or distract from what you are saying. Hide tattoos and multiple piercings.
What not to do
- Wear anything too revealing or too tight – the more skin you show the more vulnerable you become. So no cleavage, belly or short skirts!
- The same goes for underwear – avoid visible bras, knickers that are too tight or too low cut and thongs that show above your waistband.
- Don’t take big, over stuffed bags into the interview – just a medium sized handbag or laptop case.
- Don’t wear too much perfume – it could be overpowering in a small interview room!
- As a general rule don’t wear jeans, flip flops, trainers or shorts to an interview.
