According to Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, one of the key factors that is vital for anyone to achieve their goals, is persistence.
It is easy to be motivated and get things done when you are excited, however when faced with an obstacle or challenge, that same excitement can quickly fade. When this happens inspiration and determination can disappear and before you know it, so has whatever it was you were working towards.
As you progress and everything is going to plan, your dedication is clear to see and you feel good about what you are achieving. However, too often, as soon as you suffer a knock-back, you get disheartened and lose your focus.
To accomplish most goals, you need persistence. You need to be able to overcome challenges and setbacks and you need to stay committed and continue in spite of difficulty.
Just as it is easy to move forward when you are feeling excited, it is just as easy to become immobile when you start to experience problems.
When you pursue a goal, of course you set out with the intention of accomplishing that goal. As you progress and everything is going to plan, your dedication is clear to see and you feel good about what you are achieving. However, too often, as soon as you suffer a knock-back, you get disheartened and lose your focus.
This can happen when changing career. It’s taken you months, if not years to choose an alternative career. You’ve done some research and gained a bit of voluntary experience. You finally feel ready to apply for jobs and make the switch from your current career into the new one.
You apply for job after job and you hear nothing. Doubt starts to creep in and you feel disheartened. You start to wonder if you should have bothered and whether it may be easier to stay in your current career. For successful people, it is at this point that persistence kicks in.
Rather than concentrating on the negative aspects and quitting, successful people assess the situation. They ask themselves questions and they ask for feedback. Successful people keep pursuing their goal, in spite of any hurdles.
When you are striving to achieve a goal and you hit a stumbling block, try the following:
Seek help
Find someone you can speak to who may be able to provide you with feedback or expert advice
Identify any gaps
Do you lack training, skills, experience or knowledge?
Explore your own fears and beliefs
Is there something holding you back? Are you sabotaging yourself?
Make improvements
No matter what, there are always improvements that can be made
Keep going
There will still be actions you can take to keep your momentum going. How do you manage setbacks when pursing your goals?
“The most essential factor is persistence – the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come.” ~ James Whitcomb Riley
