Ask yourself what a model employee looks like to you. What do you think a model employee looks like to your boss and to the wider organisation? The answers to both questions could be exactly the same and will probably include the elements on which these tips for getting noticed by your boss are based:
- Show Up
If you don’t actually turn up for work all that often, you will get noticed — but not for the right reasons. It is true that if you always show up when you’re meant to, you may be taken for granted but that does not mean that your consistency isn’t important to your boss
- Be Fit for Work
When you go into work, make sure you’re in a fit enough shape to be there. We can all think of examples when maybe we were not as fit for work in the morning as we might have been. However, whatever the reasons we’ve had for struggling it’s not our employer’s problem – they rightly expect us to be in a fit state to work if we show our faces.
- Be Punctual
Turn up for work on time, arrive at meetings before they start and hand in work before the deadline. If you don’t do these things you will again get noticed by your boss for all the wrong reasons.
- Do What You’re Asked to Do
Most bosses are clear about what they expect you to do. If you’re in doubt, ask for clarification. Once you are clear, do what you have to do and if you need help ask. Bosses notice you for always being consistent – in the right place when you should be, doing the right things when you should be, not causing any distractions.
- Use Your Initiative
If you can, go further than you’re asked to. For example, come up with a way to improve an existing process. This is the kind of thing that’s going to have your boss looking at you in a whole new light. You’ll be setting yourself apart from other people your boss manages.
