9 Effective Questions to Help You Work It Out
There is a chance you are currently feeling fed up, unhappy or unfulfilled with your job, career or life in general. You may be even thinking, “There must be more to life than this!”
As children you had dreams. I mean we all did! However as you have grown older and entered the ‘real world’, no doubt you followed the “traditional” route of education into employment and it is likely that the dreams you had as a child have become distant memories.
I’m guessing at some point in your life and probably more than once, you were asked that all important question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When you were younger, your imagination was limitless and no doubt you had big dreams of being, doing and having so much.
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
C. S. Lewis
If you are currently feeling dissatisfied in your job or career, perhaps you have started asking yourself a slightly altered version of that question, something along the lines of “What can I do now I’m grown up?” However, unlike when you were a child, your imagination isn’t so free and vivid and you might be completely stuck for ideas and inspiration.
In order to feel fulfilled, it is essential that you get back in touch with that part of you that had the ability to dream big dreams. You may even find that you are drawn to resurrect one or more of the dreams you had when you were younger.
Creating a new dream or resurrecting an old one can take time; it is a journey. In order to begin that journey, you first need to consider the possibility of what your life would look like if it was exactly how you wanted it to be.
To kick start your journey, think about your dream and consider the following:
- How you would feel?
- What sounds and smells would surround you?
- Who would be there with you?
- Who would you spend your time with?
- What would you spend your time doing?
- Would you be in the same job/career?
- What would you spend your money on?
- What material items would you have?
- Where would you be?
There are many of you that will jump straight into this exercise and feel extremely excited and energised by the possibilities you are considering. Some of you however, will be quite or even very sceptical and your fears, concerns and social conditioning will kick in and start to tell you to ‘grow up’ and be ‘realistic’ or even tell you that ‘this is a stupid, pointless activity’ and ‘a waste of my time!’
If your initial reaction is that this is a waste of time, I still invite you to give it a go. I mean what do you really have to lose?
Start now, get dreaming, write down your answers and let your imagination run free.
